Through initiatives like the Local Shops programme, entrepreneurs have witnessed remarkable growth. This program has showcased the platform's potential to connect sellers with a diverse customer base.

India's ecommerce market has experienced explosive growth, expanding from $38.5 billion in 2018 to a staggering $69.2 billion in 2022, signifying a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 22.5 percent. Amazon, a major catalyst in this growth, commenced operations in India in 2013. Since then, it has diversified into multiple sectors, from groceries to OTT and music, amassing a customer base exceeding 100 million.

Founder Jeff Bezos once predicted that the 21st century would be the "Indian century," reaffirming Amazon's commitment to investing an additional $15 billion in India by 2030.

This subscription service, offering benefits such as faster deliveries and OTT subscriptions, has garnered a devoted following. The 2023 Prime Day Sale witnessed record-breaking participation, with 14 percent more Prime members shopping compared to the previous year. Notably, this surge in demand originated predominantly from Tier II and III cities, reflecting the program’s far-reaching impact.

Expanding Horizons through Amazon Pay

Amazon Pay, an integral component of Amazon’s ecosystem, has been a linchpin in driving the platform’s success in India. With over 8 crore users for UPI, 5 crore for Amazon Pay balance, and numerous other offerings, it has become a formidable force in India’s digital payment landscape.

Amazon’s Global Selling Program

The Amazon Global Selling Program has empowered sellers to expand their reach beyond Indian borders. An impressive cohort of 125,000 sellers are participating in the Amazon eco-system and eyeing a cumulative export value of $8 billion by the end of 2023.

While Amazon leads in scale alongside competitors like Flipkart, the overall penetration of ecommerce in India is still in its nascent stages. Regulatory challenges, including FDI restrictions, present hurdles, but Amazon has tried to tackle three challenges by keeping a keen eye on innovation, localization, and customer-centricity
